Get Help With Your ApplicationWhat Is a CSCS Card?
A CSCS card provides evidence that a construction worker has the appropriate training, qualifications or experience for their role on a construction site.
The card you need depends on the type of work you carry out and the qualifications or training you hold. CSCS provides different card routes for labourers, skilled workers, supervisors, managers, apprentices, trainees and professionally or academically qualified people.
Holding the appropriate CSCS card can be an important requirement for accessing construction sites. CSCS recommends using its card-finding guidance to identify the card appropriate for your occupation and circumstances.
What Do I Need to Apply for a CSCS Card?
The requirements depend on the type of CSCS card you are applying for.
For many applications, you will need:
- A relevant construction qualification or evidence that you are registered to complete a relevant qualification
- The appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test or an approved alternative, where required
- Your CITB test ID or relevant test information
- Personal details that match your qualification and test records
- Any additional evidence required for your particular card type
CSCS currently states that the appropriate HS&E test normally needs to have been passed within the previous two years, unless an approved alternative applies.
If you are unsure whether your qualification or test meets the requirements for a particular card, contact us before applying.
CSCS Card Types

The Blue Skilled Worker card is generally for workers who have achieved a relevant Level 2 construction qualification, apprenticeship or another approved route.
Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card
The Gold Skilled Worker card is generally associated with relevant Level 3 construction qualifications, apprenticeships or approved alternatives.
Gold CSCS Supervisor Card
The Gold Supervisor card is intended for qualifying supervisory and technical occupations. The required qualification and CITB HS&E test can depend on the occupation.
Black CSCS Manager Card
The Black Manager card is for qualifying managerial and technical occupations where the required management-level qualification has been achieved.
Red CSCS Cards
Red cards cover several different routes, including trainee, apprentice, experienced worker and experienced technical, supervisory or management routes.
The requirements vary depending on the specific red card, so it is important to select the correct route before applying.
