If you work as an electrical mate or cable puller on a UK construction site, a standard CSCS Green Card is often not enough.
In fact, major contractors regularly reject general CSCS cards on electrical sites. Instead, Joint Industry Board (JIB) sites require an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Electrical Labourer Card for site access.
In this guide, we break down what the card is, why standard cards are rejected, and how you can get qualified quickly.
(If you are unsure which card you need, read our complete UK Labourer Card comparison guide first).

Why Is a Standard CSCS Green Card Rejected on Electrical Sites?
First, a standard CSCS Green Card only covers general construction safety. As a result, it does not show specific awareness of electrical hazards.
Furthermore, general cards do not prove that you work under the supervision of a qualified electrician.
Because of these safety risks, the ECS card scheme was created by the JIB. JIB-registered site managers require an ECS card so that every worker understands safe isolation and electrical risks before stepping onto site.
Eligibility Routes: How to Qualify for an ECS Electrical Labourer Card
To qualify for an ECS Electrical Labourer Card, you must satisfy one of two pathways:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use a standard CSCS Green Card on a JIB electrical site?
In most cases, no. Major electrical contractors strictly require an ECS card because it covers trade-specific safety risks.
How long is the ECS Electrical Labourer Card valid?
The ECS Electrical Labourer Card is valid for 3 years. When it expires, you must retake the test and submit proof of ongoing work to renew it.
Do I need electrical qualifications to get an ECS Labourer Card?
No. Under Route 2, you only need a valid Level 1 Health & Safety certificate, an ECS test pass, and an employer reference letter confirming your role.
Do I need to take ECS HES Test if I have completed Health and Safety Day Course?
Yes, you would need to complete ECS HSE Test though you have completed your Health and Safety Day course (online/offline). It is only exempted under one condition where you have done CITB Health and Safety Awareness within last 2 years.
